Mike Seggie was born in Calgary and at the age of three moved to Winnipeg, MB. Mike was a man with a great sense of humor and an unwavering devotion to his friends and family. His positive outlook and ability to make people smile brightened the lives of others. The fact that Mike was almost always present at family gatherings is a testament to how dearly he loved his family, and he would not hesitate to stand up for them. Mike also had a love for vintage cars, baseball, and hockey.
The Seggie family has a long military history: Mike’s great grandfather, uncle, and father have all served in the military, and Mike shared their commitment to serving Canada. He graduated John Taylor Collegiate in 2004, and in 2006, he continued the family legacy by joining the military and proved himself a valuable and dedicated soldier.
Mike was awarded the Canadian Expeditionary Force Commander’s Commendation for his actions on March 27, 2008. While his fellow soldier, Cpl. Andrew Grenon, was aiding several wounded Afghans, a group of distraught people began to gather near the soldiers and wounded men. Mike remained level-headed throughout this ordeal and managed to pacify the group by speaking to them in Pashtu so that Andrew could continue performing first aid on the wounded men. Mike’s fearlessness and compassion for others saved several lives that day.
While Mike was dedicated to his role as a Canadian soldier, he was equally passionate about a1968 Plymouth Barracuda he had begun restoring with his dad. Mike enjoyed doing repairs on the vintage Barracuda with his father, and drove it whenever he had a chance. Today, Mike’s father and friends are working toward completing the restoration of the Barracuda to honour Mike and his dedication to his country and loved ones.
